From Hamburg into the world

Georg Duncker, descendant of an old-established family of marine insurers, founded the company, named after him, to provide shipowners with comprehensive marine insurance services.

Development of international cooperations with shipping companies and underwriters from St. Petersburg to Florence. The partnerships with multiple insurance companies from the founding days have lasted to the present.

After the end of WWI, the majority of the German merchant fleet was destroyed, and GEORG DUNCKER had to rebuild its business. As a result, the company strengthened its international business relations.

GEORG DUNCKER had once again almost lost its entire business following the severity of the hostilities. Nevertheless, the Hamburg-based broker made use of the still intact business network to restrenghten the company and to provide humanitarian aid.

For its 100th anniversary GEORG DUNCKER organized a reception at the Four Seasons, to which all employees and business partners were invited. On the occasion of the celebration the company was given a ship's bell by the Afrika Linien, which has been closely associated with GEORG DUNCKER since its foundation by John T. Essberger.

In 1994, after several stays abroad and studies at the University of St. Gallen, Christian Ross returned to Hamburg to prepare for taking over the management of the company. In 2001, he became a partner and in 2005 managing partner of GEORG DUNCKER.

Establishment of branch offices in Singapore (2009), the US (2016), Rotterdam (2022) and Zug (2025) to further strengthen the worldwide presence of GEORG DUNCKER and serve our international clients.
